More about...

  • The piece

Fauteuil designed by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand in 1928. One of the great icons of modern furniture design. Recent edition by Cassina.

Minor signs wear in the leather and the frame and base. The bottom bands are still tight. Overall very good condition for a use d piece.

  • The designer

Le Corbusier is, arguably, the backbone of modernity. His importance transcends object design; he redefined the relationship between humans and space. In an interwar era clamoring for order and reconstruction, Le Corbusier proposed Rationalism: the absolute elimination of superfluous ornament to find beauty in pure geometry, proportion, and industrial functionality. We must remember him for swapping carved wood for chrome tubular steel and leather, materials that symbolized the machine age. Together with his team, he created pieces that are eternal archetypes, like the LC4 Chaise Longue, designed not for aesthetic whim but by studying the resting curves of the human body. His concept of the home as a "machine for living" and his "Modulor" measurement system standardized global architecture. To understand Le Corbusier is to understand the transition from craftsmanship to industry.
